Research Overview

Since the beginning of the 14th Five-Year Plan period, Beijing Institute of Petrochemical Technology has adhered to innovation-driven development, continuously strengthened organized scientific research, and proactively served national strategic needs as well as the economic and social development of the capital. Focusing on key fields such as pharmaceutical and healthcare, intelligent manufacturing, intelligent equipment, green energy, energy conservation and environmental protection, and energy and urban safety, the university has promoted interdisciplinary integration and innovation in research paradigms, with a view to enhancing its capacity for breakthroughs in key and core technologies and for the commercialization of scientific and technological achievements.

The university currently has a number of scientific and technological innovation platforms, including Beijing Key Laboratories, of which it leads six and participates in six, a Beijing Philosophy and Social Sciences Research Base, Beijing Higher Education Engineering Research Centers, and national-level engineering laboratories affiliated with industry societies. It has also established interdisciplinary platforms such as the Emerging Interdisciplinary Platform for Pharmaceutical Chemicals and Equipment, the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, the Beijing Academy of Safety Production Engineering and Technology, and the Zhongguancun Institute of Energy Engineering Intelligent Equipment Industry Technology.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the university systematically implemented special initiatives to enhance its scientific and technological innovation capacity. It increased support for discipline development, key research base construction, major research infrastructure, cultivation of significant research achievements, and exploratory interdisciplinary research. By strengthening an achievement-oriented research organization model, the university has promoted a transition from scattered individual exploration to organized research and development efforts. It has also successively launched exploratory interdisciplinary research projects, major achievement cultivation projects, and research platform construction projects, encouraging innovation in research paradigms, promoting interdisciplinary integration, and fostering new growth points for discipline development.

In terms of research projects and achievements, the university has made a series of landmark advances during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. It has won, as the leading institution, the Second Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education and the Second Prize of the Beijing Technology Invention Award, and has received 15 first prizes for scientific and technological achievements from national-level industry associations. The university has also led the approval of National Key R&D Program projects and international or regional cooperation and exchange projects. Its competitive research funding has achieved an average annual growth rate of 14.1% and has exceeded RMB 100 million for three consecutive years, demonstrating the continuous improvement of its capacity to organize research and serve national and regional industrial needs.

The university’s research achievements are characterized by a strong application orientation and engineering transformation. Its welding technologies and equipment have been applied in major national projects such as Beijing Daxing International Airport, the National Stadium, also known as the Bird’s Nest, and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Its high-throughput chromatographic media have supported protein separation and purification for COVID-19 vaccines. Its norbornene monomer preparation technology was selected as one of the Top Ten Breakthrough Chemical New Materials in 2024. Its high-throughput tubular dynamic vortex separator was selected for the fifth batch of major technical equipment of the first set in the energy sector. These achievements reflect the university’s strengths in applied research in areas such as energy and chemical engineering, intelligent equipment, biomedicine, energy conservation, and environmental protection.
