Safety Engineering
Program Advantages and Distinctive Features: A key first-class program under construction in Beijing universities.
Educational Objectives
The Safety Engineering program is grounded in Beijing and serves the socio-economic development of the region. It focuses on public safety and emergency management in mega cities, with distinct features in "Chemical Safety Technology" and "Urban Safety Operation Management." The program aims to cultivate high-quality applied talents with a strong sense of social responsibility, sound scientific and cultural literacy, systematic mastery of the foundational theories and professional knowledge in safety engineering, innovative awareness, and engineering practical abilities. Graduates are expected to develop comprehensively in moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor education. Graduates will be qualified to work in urban public safety sectors, industrial, mining, commercial, and trade enterprises, and safety technology service institutions. They may engage in roles such as safety production and emergency management, safety science and technology research, safety monitoring and risk assessment, as well as safety education and training. Additionally, they will be capable of undertaking safety production and emergency management roles in government emergency management departments and related public institutions.
Program Distinctive Features
Program Advantages: Safety Engineering is a key first-class program under construction in Beijing's higher education institutions. The program established the "Beijing Academy of Safety Engineering and Technology," an independent institutional legal entity. It has obtained approval for a postdoctoral research workstation in the field of safety engineering. Relying on the Beijing Academy of Safety Engineering and Technology and jointly with the Beijing Municipal Emergency Management Bureau, the program has built a high-quality talent cultivation model of the "Modern Industry College." It has co-established "Safety and Emergency Industry-Academia-Research Cooperation Bases" with the Daxing District Emergency Management Bureau and the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area City Operations Bureau, and co-established the "Modern Industry College for Urban Chemical Industry Safety" with the Beijing Chemical Industry Group Co., Ltd.
Excellent Faculty: The program boasts a professional teaching team of 26 members with high teaching standards, strong academic capabilities, and a reasonable age structure. Over 88% hold doctoral degrees, and 65.4% hold senior professional titles. The faculty includes recipients of provincial/ministerial-level talent titles and members of national and Beijing municipal emergency management expert groups.
Teaching and Research Platforms: The program holds a master's degree granting point in safety engineering. Its Chemical Physical Hazard Testing Laboratory has been selected as a Zhongguancun Open Laboratory, possessing CNAS accreditation and CMA metrological certification for inspection and testing. It holds qualifications for Beijing Industrial Enterprise Safety Production Standardization (Level II) Assessment, Beijing Hazardous Chemical Enterprise Safety Production Standardization (Level II) Assessment, and Beijing Safe Community Construction Consulting Services. Safety Engineering is a key backbone discipline under construction at the university. Leveraging platforms such as the Zhongguancun Energy Engineering Intelligent Equipment Industry Technology Research Institute, the Capital Clean Energy (Oil & Gas) Supply and Usage Safety Guarantee Technology Collaborative Innovation Center, and Zhongguancun Open Laboratories, the program has established long-term cooperative relationships with units including the Beijing Municipal Emergency Management Bureau, relevant district emergency bureaus in Beijing, the Beijing Academy of Emergency Management Science and Technology, and the Research Center of the Ministry of Emergency Management.
Curriculum System: Guided by outcomes and aiming to cultivate safety production engineers for the capital region, the program has established a curriculum system that integrates knowledge imparting in "general education, fundamental, and professional" areas with ability cultivation in "analysis, design, and practice." It has also built a four-year integrated engineering practice training system combining on-campus and off-campus elements, focusing on developing students' engineering practice capabilities, engineering design abilities, and technological innovation awareness.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Leveraging faculty research projects, the program enhances students' innovation and entrepreneurial capabilities. It has achieved notable outcomes in initiatives such as the Undergraduate Research Training (URT) program and the national "Internet+" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. The program has consecutively secured the Special Prize in the 10th and 11th "Challenge Cup" Capital College Students' Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition, as well as the National Second Prize and Third Prize in the National College Students' Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition.
Core Courses:
Safety Principles and Management, Safety System Engineering, Urban Safety and Emergency Management, Occupational Hazards and Protection, Safety Ergonomics (Bilingual), Combustion and Explosion Safety Theory, Safety Production Technology, Industrial Ventilation and Dust Control, etc.
Domestic Postgraduate Studies:
For students interested in further studies, the program provides various guidance for postgraduate entrance examination preparation, assisting students in actively preparing for the exams. Each year, over 25% of the program's graduates are admitted to postgraduate programs at domestic universities such as Beijing Institute of Technology, University of Science and Technology Beijing, China University of Petroleum (Beijing), China University of Geosciences (Beijing), China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing), Capital University of Economics and Business, Beijing Institute of Petrochemical Technology, Wuhan University of Science and Technology, Hebei University of Technology, and Henan Polytechnic University.
Overseas (and Regional) Studies:
Each year, approximately 5% of students from each cohort pursue further studies at renowned overseas institutions in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Australia. These institutions include Illinois Institute of Technology (Chicago), Newcastle University, University of Nottingham, University of Sheffield, University of Manchester, Kansai University, Kyungil University, National University of Singapore, University of Western Australia, University of Sydney, etc. Additionally, the program organizes summer international exchange activities with the Technical University of Ostrava (Czech Republic), creating favorable conditions for students to broaden their international perspectives.
Employment Prospects / Employing Units:
In recent years, graduates of this program have been employed by various government functional departments, large state-owned enterprises, central enterprises, safety technology consulting service companies, and research institutions. Employers include emergency management departments at all levels in Beijing, Sinopec Sales Co., Ltd.
