Chemical Engineering and Technology
National First-Class Undergraduate Major Construction Site
National Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program
A Major Accredited for Engineering Education
Program Objectives
This program is designed to meet the demands of economic and social development in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the chemical industry under the "dual carbon" goals. It aims to cultivate high-quality, application-oriented engineering professionals equipped with knowledge of chemical engineering and technology, a strong sense of innovation, excellent engineering practice abilities, and a commitment to social responsibility. Graduates are expected to be well-rounded individuals with solid ethical and cultural foundations, physical and mental health, and the ability to contribute to fields such as energy and chemical engineering, new energy, safety and environmental protection, new chemical materials, pharmaceuticals, and resource utilization.
Program Highlights
Program Strengths:
This program was one of the first in China to participate in the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" in 2010. It passed the national Engineering Education Accreditation in 2014, 2017, and 2023, and was recognized as a National First-Class Undergraduate Major Construction Site in 2019. It is one of the university's most distinctive majors, with strong faculty resources, a rich academic foundation, solid talent cultivation, and extensive service to society.
Outstanding Faculty:
The program has a high-level faculty team of 26 professional teachers, including 1 national-level expert, 1 recipient of the Ministry of Education New Century Talent Program, 2 Beijing High-Level Talents, 2 Great Wall Scholars, 1 Hou Debang Chemical Science and Technology Youth Award winner, 1 ZGC High-End Leading Talent, and 2 Beijing Outstanding Innovative Talents. Additionally, over 10 faculty members are recognized as Beijing Excellent Backbone Teachers. The team includes 5 doctoral advisors, 24 master's advisors, and 12 teachers with international study or research experience. Faculty with senior professional titles account for 89%, and those with doctoral degrees make up 85% of the total.
Disciplinary Platforms:
The program benefits from robust academic platforms, including master's degree programs in chemical engineering (academic and professional), a doctoral discipline platform under construction, a National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, two Beijing Key Laboratories, two high-quality Beijing courses, and one Beijing Demonstration Center for Basic Chemistry Experiments.
Curriculum System:
The program adheres to the fundamental mission of fostering virtue and cultivating talent. It adopts a "broad foundation, wide scope, strong skills, and innovation-oriented" cultivation model and emphasizes hands-on practice and the integration of knowledge and action. The curriculum is structured around a continuous four-year system of "experiments, practice, and design" to strengthen students' engineering practice, design abilities, and innovative thinking. The program also features an integrated "three-stage, four-level" practical teaching system to meet the demands of high-quality applied talent development.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship:
The program relies on platforms such as the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and the National Engineering Practice Education Center jointly established with Yanshan Petrochemical. It has also established over 10 practice bases with enterprises in Beijing, providing strong support for students' engineering practice training. Students are encouraged to participate in innovation and entrepreneurship projects, academic competitions, and extracurricular technological activities, with platforms, mentors, and funding provided by the program. In the past three years, students have participated in 88 innovation and entrepreneurship projects, including 24 at the national level and 51 at the municipal level, publishing several high-level academic papers. The program has hosted major competitions such as the Beijing Chemical Principles Competition, the National Chemical Design Competition, and the North China Regional Chemical Experiment Competition, providing students with excellent platforms for innovation and practical experience. Students have won over 60 awards in provincial and ministerial competitions, including special prizes, first prizes, and second prizes.
Core Curriculum
Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Principles of Chemical Engineering, Chemical Reaction Engineering, Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, Chemical Process Design, Chemical Process Analysis and Synthesis, Chemical Technology, etc.
Postgraduate Studies
Domestic Studies:
The program provides comprehensive guidance for students seeking further education. Each year, more than 10% of graduates are admitted to prestigious universities for postgraduate studies.
International Studies:
The program has partnered with the University of Edinburgh to offer "4+1," "2+2," and "2+3" international exchange programs, as well as a dual-degree program with Heriot-Watt University. These collaborations create opportunities for students to broaden their global perspectives. Each year, students pursue advanced studies at renowned institutions in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.
Career Prospects
Over the past three years, the program has maintained a graduate employment rate above 95%, with career opportunities spanning energy and chemical engineering, safety and environmental protection, chemical materials, pharmaceuticals, and resource utilization. Graduates are employed by major state-owned enterprises in petrochemicals and refining, chemical design institutes, environmental protection and monitoring agencies, pharmaceutical research and production companies, and domestic research institutions. Graduates enjoy strong competitive advantages and promising career prospects in these fields.
