Environmental Engineering

The Department of Environmental Engineering, part of the School of Mechanical Engineering, was established in 2001. After more than 20 years of development, it has formed a distinctive educational model that combines fundamental training in environmental engineering with a strong focus on environmental protection equipment. The department currently has 354 undergraduate students, and enrollment was expanded to four classes in 2023, admitting about 120 students each year.

Since its early years, the program has been recognized as a key major at the municipal and national levels and has received several awards for teaching achievements. Its Teaching and Experiment Center was selected as a municipal demonstration center and successfully passed expert evaluations. The Environmental Engineering major has also been included in national specialty development programs and passed national Engineering Education Accreditation twice, in 2017 and 2020, marking its place among top engineering programs. In recent years, the department has joined several national and municipal alliances that promote collaboration in environmental education and industry.

In graduate education, the department has cooperated with several universities since 2002 to jointly train master's students. Since 2011, it has independently cultivated graduate students in environmental protection–related fields. In 2021, it was approved to offer two master's degree programs—Environmental Science and Engineering (academic) and Resources and Environment (professional)—ushering in a new stage of postgraduate education.

Training Objectives

Environmental Engineering is an interdisciplinary field closely related to chemistry, biology, mechanical engineering, architecture, economics, management, and other disciplines. Based on the fundamental principles and methods of Environmental Science and Engineering, it focuses on green and low-carbon technologies related to water pollution control, air pollution control, solid waste treatment and disposal, physical pollution prevention, environmental impact assessment, and ecological restoration. By integrating engineering, planning, and management measures, the discipline aims to control pollution, protect ecological environments and resources, and promote coordinated development of society, the economy, and ecological civilization.

This program aims to cultivate high-quality application-oriented talents who meet national needs for ecological civilization construction and coordinated pollution and carbon reduction. Students are expected to possess a sustainable development mindset, master the fundamental theories and professional knowledge of Environmental Science and Engineering, and demonstrate strong engineering practice, innovation ability, lifelong learning capacity, teamwork, and communication skills. With a distinctive focus on environmental protection equipment design and development, graduates will be equipped to engage in pollution control, environmental engineering design and operation, environmental assessment, and environmental management, becoming well-rounded socialist builders and successors.

Faculty Team

The Department of Environmental Engineering currently has nearly 20 core faculty members, including 6 full professors. Over 70% hold senior professional titles, 70% are under 45 years old, and 95% have doctoral degrees.

Talent Training

Following the principle of "pollution control technology as the foundation, environmental protection equipment as the distinguishing feature," the program establishes its curriculum within the framework of Engineering Education Accreditation general criteria and discipline-specific standards. This ensures both comprehensive disciplinary training and the cultivation of specialized expertise.

Graduates

The Department of Environmental Engineering consistently adheres to a student-centered approach and employs various measures to support student growth, including assigning academic advisors and outstanding mentors to guide students in clarifying their academic and career goals. Students are encouraged to broaden their academic horizons and develop diverse interests. The department provides strong practical training platforms and internship opportunities, enhancing students' hands-on skills and innovation capabilities through intensified practical sessions and industry–university–research collaboration.

Undergraduates in Environmental Engineering participate increasingly in faculty research projects, undergraduate research training programs, and scientific competitions, achieving substantial results. Since the establishment of the program, the initial employment rate of graduates has continued to rise, reaching over 95% in the past three years. Major employers and postgraduate institutions are listed in the table below, and each year several students are admitted to top universities for graduate studies. Meanwhile, the university places great emphasis on graduate follow-up surveys, and employers generally recognize that the professional knowledge and competence of our graduates meet job requirements, with strong overall abilities.
