Emergency Technology and Management

Program Highlights: The program features a strong engineering and practice orientation and is designed to cultivate versatile professionals who are proficient in both emergency technologies and emergency organization and management.

ITraining Objectives

Guided by the university’s mission of focusing on the advantageous research area of urban safety operation and serving the major needs of high-quality development in the capital and related industries, the program aims to foster high-caliber talents in Emergency Technology and Management with a strong sense of social responsibility and solid scientific and cultural literacy. Students systematically master fundamental theories and professional knowledge of emergency technology, develop innovation awareness and hands-on engineering skills, and achieve all-round development in moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic and labor education. Graduates are equipped to work in government agencies, enterprises and public institutions, as well as public safety, chemical, fire and related sectors, engaging in risk identification and assessment, monitoring and early warning, emergency response and rescue, emergency plan preparation and drills, research and development, and emergency education and training.

Training Features

Disciplinary Advantages: Emergency Technology and Management is an emerging interdisciplinary program established in response to the national demand for the modernization of emergency management. It is classified under Safety Science and Engineering (Discipline Code: 082902T), with a four-year duration leading to the Bachelor of Engineering degree, and was launched in 2025. The program is committed to cultivating application-oriented professionals who meet national and regional development needs, possess a solid foundation, strong technical competence and capabilities, and demonstrate innovative spirit and social responsibility.

Strong Faculty: The program has a highly qualified and experienced teaching team. All 14 full-time faculty members hold a PhD degree, and 70% have senior professional titles. They are active in frontline research and practical work in the emergency field and are dedicated to training high-quality emergency professionals who can meet societal needs. The faculty also actively engage in social services and maintain extensive collaboration with government departments and enterprises, providing technical support and decision-making consultation for real-world emergency problems and contributing to the development of the Emergency Technology and Management sector.

Academic Platforms: The school is authorized to confer the professional master's degree in Resources and Environment. It hosts a Zhongguancun Open Laboratory, CMA- and CNAS-accredited testing laboratories, and is recognized as a Level II work safety standardization evaluation body for industrial enterprises and hazardous chemicals enterprises in Beijing. It also serves as a consulting institution for safe community construction in Beijing, playing an irreplaceable role in integrating industry-university-research collaboration and in training high-level talents. The program maintains long-term cooperation with the Beijing Emergency Management Bureau, district emergency management bureaus, the Beijing Academy of Emergency Management Science and Technology, and research centers of the Ministry of Emergency Management.

Curriculum System: Centered on engineering technology and practical ability, the curriculum strengthens training in risk assessment, smart emergency management, and emergency planning and drills. Extracurricular science and technology competitions and project-based learning are embedded into coursework to continuously enhance students' capabilities in risk analysis, emergency decision-making, engineering innovation practice, interdisciplinary knowledge integration, and communication and coordination. The program strives to cultivate urgently needed Emergency Technology and Management professionals for the nation and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

Practice Teaching Bases: Off-campus practice teaching relies mainly on the National Engineering Practice Education Center jointly built with Yanshan Petrochemical, and on joint platforms with the Beijing Emergency Management Bureau, including the "Beijing Key Unit for Innovation-oriented Talent Training in Work Safety" and the "Beijing Key Unit for Practical Training in Work Safety Emergency Rescue". The program also jointly builds the "Safety and Emergency Industry-University-Research Cooperation Base" with the Daxing District Emergency Management Bureau and Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area Urban Operation Bureau, and the "Modern Industrial College of Urban Chemical Safety" with Beijing Chemical Industry Group Co., Ltd.

Main Courses

Urban Safety and Emergency Management, Combustion and Explosion Safety Theory, Safety Systems Engineering, Crisis Response and Public Opinion Management, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Emergency Rescue Theory and Technology, Emergency Plan Preparation and Drills, Intelligent Emergency Monitoring and Early Warning, Fundamentals of Safety Engineering Mechanics, Introduction to Emergency Technology and Management, Emergency Laws and Regulations, Emergency Command and Communication Training, and Practice of Safety and Emergency Capability Evaluation, among others.

Domestic Graduate Study:

For students intending to pursue further study, the program provides guidance and support for entrance examinations. Relevant master's programs include Safety Science and Engineering, Emergency Management and Emergency Management Science and Engineering, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Engineering and Protective Engineering, and professional master's programs in Resources and Environment. Target universities include China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing), University of Science and Technology Beijing, China University of Geosciences (Beijing), Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing Jiaotong University, China University of Petroleum (Beijing), Beijing Institute of Petrochemical Technology and others.

Overseas Graduate Study:

For overseas progression, students may consider related disciplines such as Safety Science and Engineering, Public Policy and Disaster Management, Risk Management and Insurance, and Engineering Disaster and Infrastructure Protection. The program actively broadens students' international horizons and has established cooperative relationships with overseas universities, including VSBTechnical University of Ostrava in the Czech Republic.

Career Prospects:

Graduates of Emergency Technology and Management enjoy broad career prospects. At present, the talent gap within the Chinese emergency management system is estimated at around 400,000, with a shortage of approximately 2 million emergency management professionals across industry sectors, and an even greater demand driven by the development of the emergency management industry. Graduates can work in emergency management departments, work safety supervision authorities, and disaster prevention and mitigation agencies at various governmental levels; in safety management, emergency management and risk management divisions of enterprises as ERC (Emergency Response and Coordination) engineers, responsible for work safety, emergency management and risk assessment; in research, production and sales of emergency equipment; and in emergency management and safety training. They may also pursue master's degrees in safety engineering and related fields, or engage in scientific research in emergency management in research institutes and universities.
