Research Areas and Distinctive Features

The degree program actively explores generic methods applicable to chemical safety, dust and gas safety, pipeline operation assurance, and urban safety risk and emergency technologies. Relying on platforms such as Beijing Key Laboratories and engineering research centers of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, it has achieved a series of high-level outcomes in areas including prevention of hazardous chemical accidents, safety assurance for oil and gas pipelines, flame-retardant and explosion-prevention theory, and risk early warning for urban utility tunnels.

(1) Chemical Safety Technology
This research direction is closely aligned with the characteristics of work safety and emergency management in Beijing. It focuses on the hazardous properties of chemicals and safety control technologies that are central to risk prevention and control in the production and use of hazardous chemicals. Research topics include chemical process safety technology and management, testing and identification of the physical hazards of chemicals, thermal safety analysis and evaluation of chemical reactions, and safety management of hazardous chemicals in laboratories. A distinctive research profile has been formed in the theory and technology for preventing and controlling chemical process accidents.

(2) Dust and Gas Safety Technology
Targeting gas and dust safety risks in the operation of extra-large cities and in industrial production, this direction focuses on accident evolution mechanisms and key technologies for accident prevention and control. Research is conducted on gas and dust combustion and explosion theory, dynamic mechanisms of fluid transportation, identification of hazardous properties of flammable and explosive substances, and technologies for major hazard identification, analysis, and assessment. A distinctive research strength has been established in the disaster-causing mechanisms of gas and dust explosion accidents and in technologies for their prevention and suppression.

(3) Urban Risk and Emergency Management
In response to the characteristics of extra-large cities, such as high population density, high pressure on urban operation, elevated social safety risks, and complex correlations, cascading effects, and compounding of disasters, this direction focuses on key regulated sectors such as large urban complexes, new energy storage facilities, logistics parks, transportation networks, and emerging industries. Research topics include theories of safety-resilient urban risk assessment, technologies and mechanisms for dual-prevention systems (risk classification control and hidden danger investigation and treatment), and safety emergency equipment and technologies. This has formed a distinctive research focus on safety and emergency issues in extra-large cities.
