Zhiyuan School of Liberal Arts
Zhiyuan School of Liberal Arts, a teaching and research unit of Beijing Institute of Petrochemical Technology (BIPT), was formed in June 2021 from the merger of the former Mathematics and Physics Department and Foreign Languages Department. With a focus on talent cultivation, discipline development, scientific research, social services, and international exchange and cooperation, the college provides courses in mathematics, physics and foreign languages for undergraduates and postgraduates while managing educational and teaching affairs. It is committed to enhancing categorized and tiered teaching, improving the educational mechanism, and accomplishing the fundamental mission of fostering virtue through education.
The college consists of the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Center, the Mathematics Teaching and Research Center, the Physics Teaching and Experiment Center, and the General Administration Office. It currently has 90 faculty and staff members, with 80 of them being full-time teachers. Among the faculty, 44% hold doctoral degrees. Additionally, the teaching staff has achieved 24 selections for high-level talent programs, such as the National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars, Young Top-notch Talent, Beijing Excellent Young Teachers, and key teacher initiatives.
Zhiyuan School of Liberal Arts is closely aligned with BIPT's crucial mission of cultivating engineers for Beijing in the new era. Guided by the philosophy of "strengthening foundations and pursuing steady, far-reaching progress," the college continuously enhances the teaching quality of fundamental courses, with an emphasis on fostering students' innovative spirit through competitions. Over the past five years, its faculty members have not only won multiple national prizes in moral education competitions, but achieved breakthroughs in winning Beijing municipal awards for exemplary undergraduate courses, textbooks, and laboratories. Likewise, its students have secured a leading number and level of high-profile competition awards among municipal universities.
To promote students' all-around development, Zhiyuan School of Liberal Arts has initiated the Zhiyuan New Engineering Experimental Program in adherence to the principle of upholding fundamental values while driving innovation. This initiative adopts measures such as strengthening general education to enhance humanistic and engineering literacy, fostering interdisciplinary integration by highlighting the "AI + specialized fields" feature, and implementing project-based teaching to reinforce students' practical and innovative capability. Through these approaches, the college aims to unleash students' potential and pioneer a new talent cultivation model for nurturing new-era engineers for the capital.
