The School of Mechanical Engineering was established in 1978, which is one of the earliest departments at Beijing Institute of Petrochemical Technology. There are three First-Class disciplines, including Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics. Mechanical Engineering is also a Beijing high-grade discipline jointly built with Tsinghua University. The School possesses two First-Class discipline master's degree authorization points in Mechanical Engineering and Environmental Science and Engineering; and it also offers three master's professional degree authorization categories in Machinery, Resources and Environmental Engineering, and Energy and Power Engineering.
At present, six undergraduate majors are provided in the School, covering Mechanical Engineering, Robots Engineering, Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering, Energy and Power Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and New Energy Science and Engineering. There are currently over 2,500 students enrolled in undergraduate, master's and doctoral degrees.
Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Energy and Power Engineering have been approved as National First-Class undergraduate specialty. Both Mechanical Engineering and Environmental Engineering have also successfully passed the Engineering Education Accreditation.
The school now has 96 full-time faculty teachers, over 93% of whom hold a doctoral degree, and 65% hold senior professional titles. The faculty team includes one National-Leading Talents, and four experts enjoying the State Council Special Allowance. In addition, three faculty teachers have been listed among the "World's Top 2% Scientists", with one ranked in the "Career-long Impact".
The School owns four provincial and ministerial-level scientific research platforms, including the Beijing Key Laboratory of Opto-mechatronic Equipment Technology, the Beijing Key Laboratory of Pipeline Critical Technology and Equipment for Deepwater Oil & Gas Development, the Research Center of Energy Engineering Advanced Joining Technology (EEAJT), and the Key Laboratory of Offshore and Gas Engineering Technology and Intelligence—High-efficiency separation technology research and testing sub-center, developing distinctive research features in underwater welding technologies and equipment, robot technique and application, digital design and intelligent manufacturing of mechanical products, high-efficiency fluid separation and environmental protection technologies, as well as energy-efficiency and clean energy technologies.
Over the past three years, the School has obtained more than 30 scientific research awards at the provincial and ministerial levels, and industry associations. In 2024, the average research funding per faculty member exceeded RMB 500,000. Furthermore, the School awards honorary titles such as the "National Huang Danian-style teacher team", "Beijing Worker Pioneer Team".
